Jor-El Lord, Demitrius Hall, & I recently took a trip down to Southern California to skate and shoot with Chris McDonald. Chris is a motivated up and coming skateboard photographer that lives in Santa Barbara. He showed us some of the local spots and took a ton of sequences while we were there. Here is a little taste of what went down.

Go Skateboarding Day 2011

June 21st, 2011 - 8 spots & 15 miles skated

Go skate day started off w/ a short filming session at Ed Benedict Skate Plaza with Lance Normine, Brian Baca, C-Money, and Compton. At about 1:30, our mob of about 20 headed out on the max towards the Rose Quarter. We got off the max there and skated the R.Q. Out Ledge & Big 3 Stair for about a half hour and filmed a few clips. Little Anthony got a kickflip down the 3 block. Squid and Robert Parrish also got a clip each there.

As we skated south down the east side of the waterfront to the Eastbank Esplanade, a couple of skaters ate shit. We rolled up and a guy was jammin' out on his drum set. A few skaters started dancing around him, which was pretty funny. We waited for a few more people to show up as we skated the manual pads and flat ground at esplanade. Robert Parrish snapped an ollie over a tall bench from flat and then slammed super hard on his elbow trying to 180 over a tall pole.

I was borrowing someones camera and they ended up needing it back half way through the filming day, which was kind of a bummer but meant I didn't have to lug a heavy backpack around on my shoulders while trying to skate.

     At that point we headed across the Hawthorne Bridge with our mob of about 25-30 skaters. We stopped right on the other side of the bridge to skate the Hawthorne Kink Ledge, which was pretty fun. Vinnie got a frontside tailslide through the kink and Squid got a super nice feeble pop out on the ledge from flat.
     We left the ledge and cruised to the Keller Auditorium 5 stair and flat ground spot. We skated there while D-Blaze recharged his camera battery for a little bit as we also waited for Mikey Calcagno & Carl Larson to meet up. Squid set up a steep triangular road sign and wallied over it. Another skater tried it and almost smashed his nuts. D-Blaze got lost trying to find a store and half of us waited at Keller for like 30 minutes for his return.
     We then headed up to Rock Manual Pad to meet back up with the rest of our mob and a brief session. We were there for about 25 minutes before Woody, the best security guard in Portland, showed up with a smile to kick us out. We told him it was Go Skate Day and Woody replied "I know. That's why I walked extra slow to get here!".

     The plan was to try and barbecue at Lincoln High School but Compton had to leave so we couldn't meet up with him and use his BBQ. We ended up going up to Lincoln anyway to skate. Some of the locals were there chillin', including C. Hart, Trevor Lial, Tyler Bledsoe, and a couple others. Mikey Calcagno was tearing it up, trying to film lines for a bit and I ended up filming a line with D. Blaze. There was also a few games of skate going on with Gabe Needham, Cesar Maldanado and a couple others. Eventually, Luke Rossiter, Tully, & Elliot Coates also met up with us at Lincoln.
     After sitting around and trying to figure out what to do next, we decided to head to Commonwealth Skate park for their BBQ & session. We skated all the way from Lincoln High back towards the Hawthorne Bridge, mobbing through the streets, one kid almost got hit by a car that had to slam on their brakes as we ran a red light. I was pushing super fast down the sidewalk and ended up losing balance and I ate shit, scraping up my knee and ripping my pants. It kinda felt good to hit the pavement. It's been a long time since I've had a hard slam cruising at high speed.
     We crossed back over the Hawthorne Bridge with our mob and headed past Esplanade and to Commonwealth Skate Park. Most of the kids were on hard wheels all day so they must of been tired from skating back and forth all day. A few of them ended up taking the bus to Commonwealth.
     We finally made it to Commonwealth Skate Park and it was really fun. A lot of the old Pharmacy homeys were there so it was super good to see T. Brown, Jason Whyte, Joe Davis, Peter, Max Henderson, Mike D, and many more. They had beers and hot dogs for a buck each with free skating in the skate park. There was even a live band. Everybody chilled there for a couple hours and had a good time conversing and skating. It winded down at about 9:00pm and everybody went their separate ways for the night.

This skate day had to be the best Go Skate Day I've ever had. I wanna thank all the kids who came out and skated with us all day, Officer Woodward (Woody) for keeping a lot of Portland skaters out of trouble for the last ten years, and also Lance and Jennifer @ Commonwealth. It was definitely a day to remember.
